Scorpion Helmet
I purchased this helmet for two reasons.
FIRST - Scorpion makes helmet for the US that are a little wider at the base which makes it easier to comfortably fit Quiet Ride Ear Muffs in Scorpion standard helmets with head sizes up to XXXL in size. Most HJC helmets are 8” at the base and 10” wide on the exterior in the muff installation area.

SECOND - I was interested in AirFit™ helmet pump air inflation system for a custom fit. Cheek pad and neck roll adjustment system for improved fit and wind noise reduction. This Scorpion model has a patented unique air pump system built into the padding that allows the wearer to adjust the cheek pad pressure by pumping air into small bladders in the cheeks.

If I could splice into the tubing between the air pump and the air bladder cheek pads on each side with the air bladders used under Quiet Ride ear noise reduction muffs the Scorpion EXO-900 Helmet would become a new supper helmet with the addition Quiet Ride ear noise reduction muffs rated at NRR 18 (noise reduction rating in decibels). A NRR 18 rating translates into eliminating sound entering the ear canal by 65% within the Scorpion Helmet.

If you have a pair of ear noise reduction muffs around the house put them on and start you snowmobile or motorcycle to experience what 65% or more reduction of exterior sound entering your ears is really all about.

Also, helmet speakers can be easily installed in Quiet Ride ear noise reduction muffs. Because exterior sound interfering with helmet speaker sound has been reduced by 65%, when installed in ear muffs, the Scorpion Helmet will become a supper helmet for those who want to enjoy music while riding or communicating with other riders or taking a phone call.

From here on I will attempt to give you a step by step process I went through to install Quiet Ride ear noise reduction muffs in the Scorpion EXO 900 helmet

Transformation of Scorpion EXO 900 into Super Helmet

Step 1

Step 2

Second, I was interested in AirFit™ helmet pump air inflation system for a custom fit. Cheek pad and neck roll adjustment system for improved fit and wind noise reduction. This Scorpion model has a patented unique air pump system built into the padding that allows the wearer to adjust the cheek pad pressure
by pumping air into small bladders in the cheeks.

Step 3
Cheek pad with air bladder pump and air release button removed from helmet.

Step 4
Upside down view of removable cheek pad with air system.

Step 5
Bottom view of Scorpion EXO 900 helmet with cheek pad
and air pump system removed.

Step 6
Electrical vinyl tape removed from ear muff so ear pad glued to washer
can be unsnapped from ABS cup.

Step 7
Cup and Washer seperated.

Step 8
Use ABS cup to locate what padding needs to be removed by inserting ABS cup only into helmet while you are wearing helmet without cheek and air bladder padding. Center ear cup over ear and feel backside of cup to see what Styrofoam insulation is directly behind it. Take helmet off and place ear cup over location ear muff will go in helmet. Trace around ear muff and commence cutting through Styrofoam to inner shell.

Step 9
Turquoise line is unconnected splice in Styrofoam insulation present in most Scorpion and HJC models. This is a big help in locating the back edge of cut out section in all modern helmets for installing Quiet Ride Ear Muffs

Step 10
Tools used to cut out the cavity were a pocket knife and a wire cutter.
Fancy tools are not necessary to cut out opening.

Step 11
These are the “high tech” tools used to cut out Styrofoam, plastic, and cloth. Stab thru Styrofoam every half inch or so along marked line down to inside of hard shell works well to remove desired Styrofoam cut out section. When you encounter thin plastic sheet material using a wire cutter to snip thru material worked better than trying to cut thru plastic with a knife.

Step 12
Quiet Rider Ear Muff should fit loosely in cavity created. Place helmet on head to make sure ear muff in cavity is in correct location. If not, carve out a little more Styrofoam. In this particular helmet from Scorpion notice there was a factory splice separating Styrofoam pieces. Red pointer shows location of factory splice. If you own one of these helmets this information will be very helpful in locating the proper spot to cut out the Styrofoam in your helmet. It was not necessary to cut Styrofoam in splice area until you see the white Styrofoam curve cut above splice line. Previous pictures show the splice line area.

Step 13
In this picture the cheek padding with air system has been reinstalled in the helmet over the ear muffs installed in Styrofoam cut out cavities. Lift up the corners of the cheek pad to calculate how much plastic reinforcement on back side needs to be cut out. Do not cut padding just snip of plastic backing. This will expose access padding to cut out. Leave fabric cover uncut. Fabric will be curled under remaining plastic backer material and glued to plastic backer.

Step 14
Scorpion air pump and air line exposed. Picture gives you an idea of amount of plastic backer material to be cut off and removed. 3/16” T will be spliced In to air line on each side to provide air to bladder under each Quiet Ride Ear Muff which when pumped up will provide pressure around ears for ear muff
pad to make seal around ears.

Step 15
3/16” T installed on left side of helmet ready for bladder
installation to go under ear muff.

Step 16
Velcro stuck to exposed inner shell of helmet followed by installation of bladder with Velcro. Short air line from Quiet Ride bladder to 3/16” T will provide air to both Scorpion cheek bladders and Quiet Ride bladders under ear muffs.

Step 17
Left side Quiet Ride Ear Muff installation complete.

Step 18
3/16” T was spliced in to air line on right side of helmet going to cheek air bladder for Quiet Ride air bladder. Right side Quiet Ride Ear Muff installation is complete.

You can expect to spend about 3 hours modifying the helmet and installing Quiet Ride Ear Muffs. Your reward for creating a super helmet will be a very quiet helmet that will protect your hearing and at the same time allow a set of helmet speakers if installed in ear muffs to work 65% better with the reduction of 65% of exterior sound getting into the ear muff and into your ear. Plus, understanding warnings given to you when wearing communicator system given by another rider wearing a communicator system could save you from injury or a fatal accident.
